The First Family arrived in Oahu, Hawaii Thursday for a Christmas vacation. President Barack Obama was born and mainly raised in the state. The family will spend more than a week at the same oceanfront vacation home that was rented the previous year.

Michael Jordan sues Chicago grocery stores

Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan is suing Jewel Food Stores and Dominick’s Finer Foods for their ads published in a commemorative Sports Illustrated issue, “Jordan: A Hall of Fame Career.”

In the Jewel ad, a pair of red and white sneakers with the number 23 on the tongues are an “inaccurate and misleading copy of Air Jordan basketball shoes,” says the lawsuit. Above the shoes, a message congratulates the “fellow Chicagoan who was ‘just around the corner’ for so many years,” reports Yahoo.

According to the suit, the Dominick’s ad features MJ’s name with the phrase “You are a cut above” and a photo of a steak.  Below the congratulations is an ad for $2 off a Rancher’s Reserve steak, a trademark of Dominick’s parent Safeway.

Fantasia to premiere her new V1 reality show

fantasiaThe third season American Idol winner, Fantasia Barrino is getting her own reality show.  “Fantasia for Real” premieres Jan. 11 on VH1 and will follow the life of the 25-year-old singer and single mother.  Barrino’s eight-year-old daughter Zion as well as her famous first cousins K-Ci and JoJo of Jodeci will also be featured in the show.

“It’s just the truth,” Barrino told the New York Daily News. “Celebrities can be untouchable sometimes, but I’ve always given my story straight because I’m proud of myself and I’m proud that I can talk about what I’ve been through. People can relate to me. There are things going on with Fantasia that are probably going on with another family right around the corner.” </p>


Rapper T.I. released from jail

TIRapper T.I. was released Tuesday morning from a Forrest City, Ark. prison, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  After serving seven months, the rapper whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., will serve the rest of  his one year and one day sentence in a correctional center near Fulton County Airport in Atlanta.

‘Sesame Street’ and ‘227’ star Alaina Reed Hall dies

Actress Alaina Reed Hall,63, died of breast cancer last Thursday in Santa Monica.  She played Olivia, a photographer and sister of the character Gordon on “Sesame Street” from 1976-1988.  Reed- Hall also starred on the 1985-1990, NBC series “227” as the landlady and best friend of the main character played by actress Marla Gibbs. In the show’s final season, Reed Hall’s character married a character played by her real-life husband, Kevin Peter Hall, who died in 1991.

Born Bernice Reed in Springfield, Ohio, on Nov. 10, 1946, she appeared in stage productions of “Hair” and “Chicago.”  She also made guest appearances on TV series such as “ER,” “NYPD Blue” and “Friends. Reed Hall appeared in a number of films, including “Death Becomes Her” and “Cruel Intentions.”

Reed-Hall is survived by her third husband, Tamim Amini and two children from a previous marriage.

Beyonce’s mom files for divorce

There’s one more single lady in the Knowles family.  Tina Knowles, singer Beyonce’s mother, recently filed for divorce from the performer’s father and manager Matthew Knowles.  The couple was wed in 1980 and also has a 23-year-old daughter Solange who is also a performer.

“The decision to end our marriage is an amicable one,” the couple said in a statement provided to The Associated Press. “We remain friends, parents, and business partners. If anyone is expecting an ugly messy fight, they will be sadly disappointed. We ask for your respect of our privacy as we handle this matter.”

A month ago Los Angeles resident, Alexsandra Wright filed a paternity suit against Matthew Knowles claiming he is the father of her unborn child.

Mariah Carey becomes first to have double platinum holiday ringtone

Released in 1994, “All I Want for Christmas is You,” is now the first seasonal ringtone to sell more than two million units.  The single, written by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff, was a hit song on Carey’s “Merry Christmas” album.  It’s been the no. 1 holiday ringtone since 2006.

“Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has become one of the essential musical hallmarks of the holiday season and continues to set records each year,” said Adam Block, GM/VP of Legacy Recordings, Sony Music Entertainment’s catalog division.

Ex-assistant sues Wayans Brothers over book

Keenan Ivory, Shawn and Marlon Wayans are being sued by former personal assistant, Jared Edwards, who claims the brothers stole his idea for a book and then published “101 Ways to Know You’re a Golddigger” in May.

According to papers filed Thursday in a Manhattan federal court, Edwards quit his job in 2006 after the Wayans brothers told him his book, “You Know You’re a Golddigger When…” didn’t have a chance of being published.

Oprah Winfrey donates $1.5 million to Atlanta school

Oprah Winfrey recently donated $1.5 million to a private inner-city school in Atlanta.  The Ron Clark Academy will use the money to  build a cafeteria, gymnasium and theater, reports the Huffington Post.  The school has struggled to raise money from donors to pay for its $2.8 million operating budget.  Ron Clark, the school’s founder, was featured on Winfrey’s show twice.  He wrote the best-selling teaching book, “The Essential 55.”  She also donated $365,000 to the school last year.
